Thoughts from an Alpine Village by Meryl Ward

undefinedA long weekend away in a snowy alpine village provided plenty of thinking time for me. Interestingly, every menu in the local restaurants proudly displayed farming connections with quality local cheese, eggs and meat. The value of provenance is clearly not just an English issue!

Back home, we are preparing to entertain a delegation of Chinese visitors who want to see English high welfare group sow housing and free-farrowing systems. This ongoing interest in our systems reinforces to me the genuine, unique points that continue to differentiate us – group housing for all dry sows, appropriate gut fill for adult animals, innovative manipulable materials, no castration and the use of welfare outcome measurements.

AHDB Pork has a valuable role to play in communicating our unique selling points of safe, high welfare, traceable pork at home and abroad, to keep the supply chain honest so only genuine players benefit from the marketplace premiums and to work with the Assurance Bodies to keep pushing the boundaries in a way that improves welfare in line with emerging scientific opinion.

Our premium is well deserved, and is stimulating interest both at home and in export markets. With only 40% of the home market supplied with English products, there is plenty of headroom to grow our market here and abroad. We live in challenging times but have already overcome the first hurdle of having customers excited about buying English quality, safe and traceable pork products.’
