With a population of 1.3 billion and meat consumption rising by 14% per year, India has to be on our radar and, although demand is driven by chicken, pork is certainly not shunned.
To understand a market, you need to experience it first-hand. Our leading exporters were keen to see what was on offer and joined me in Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai. The British High Commission built a comprehensive programme for our visit.
We met with meat importers and also wholesalers and distributors, who supply the retail and foodservice outlets that are frequented by the growing middle class population, and the hotels that serve around 8 million tourists who visit India each year.
The visit confirmed our initial thoughts on the long-term potential the market has. The wealth of the middle class was evident in the prosperous areas of the three cities we visited. The high-end retailers we visited all reported growing demand for pork and pork products.
We learned that the market comes with significant challenges, not least import regulations and logistical issues with the cold chain. However, Great Britain and India have a strong bond from our shared heritage. By the end of the trip, all our exporters were excited about the opportunities and are already following up with the leading market participants we met.
