Soil protection – cross compliance

Home \ Environment & Buildings \ Water, Soil and Air \ Soil protection – cross compliance

The Defra Soil Protection Review (SPR) was introduced to tackle degradation threats to soil. When soil is lost or damaged through compaction, erosion or loss of organic matter it becomes less productive. It can also have a significant impact on water quality and aquatic ecosystems, contribute to localised flooding from increased runoff or cause problems such as soil on roads.

Anyone who receives support under the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) must meet the Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition (GAEC) standards for soil management and protection, as well as all the other relevant standards that are set out here.
