GB pig prices continue to slip

In the week ended 2 December, the EU-spec SPP fell 1.2p on the week to average 152.04p/kg. The current quote is only 0.65p higher than the equivalent week last year, which is the smallest premium since the series surpassed year earlier levels at the start of August 2016.

The number of meat-free evening meal occasions during the week is growing as consumers increasingly look to reduce the amount of meat in their diet. Health is given as the primary reason behind this. Compared to last year, the number of meal occasions featuring red meat is declining both during the week (-1.2%) and at the weekend (-0.7%).

EU pig meat production consistent in August

At 1.9 million tonnes, EU pig meat production in August was unmoved on year earlier levels, according to the latest data from the European Commission. However, at 15.3 million tonnes, accumulated year to date production to August is 2% lower year on year, reflecting generally reduced production so far in 2017.

Decline in EU weaner prices

In the 12 weeks ended 26 November, the average EU weaner price fell €5.53 to stand at €42.12/head, continuing on the downwards course that began in May. The current quote is now €2.46 lower than year earlier levels.

Russia bans imports of Brazilian pork

From 1 December, Russia’s Rosselkhoznador, the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance, has banned Brazilian pig meat and beef due to concerns that the meat contained muscle growth stimulant ractopamine.

Weaker currency boosts competitiveness of GB pig production

Great Britain was the only member country to record a decline in pig production costs in sterling terms last year, according to the latest pig production costs report from InterPIG. The InterPIG group consists of a selection of organisations from key producing countries, with AHDB representing GB.
