UK pork production up 5% in July

In July, UK clean pig slaughter reached 909,100 head, 3% more than the same month in the previous year. 

Russia returns to a net importer position

Russia has returned to being a net importer of pig meat. In the year to May, imports of pig meat (including offal) increased by over 50% on the year, to 63,600 tonnes.

Slight increase for the SPP

GB finished pig prices continued to show little movement in the week ended 10 August, with the EU-spec SPP reaching 153.01p/kg.

Retail sales of summer staples decline

Overall GB pig meat* sales volumes fell almost 5% year-on-year in the 12 weeks ending 14 July, according to the latest Kantar data. The drop in value was slightly larger, due to a small decline in average retail prices.

Danish pig herd contraction slows

According to the latest figures published by Statistics Denmark, the Danish pig population at the start of the third quarter had decreased by 2.5% on a year earlier, to 12.6 million pigs.

Pork production gains outstrip export developments in the US

In the first half of the year, US pork exports decreased by 2% compared with the same period in 2018. The decline comes despite 3% growth in slaughter, on the back of an expanding breeding herd.

Japanese pork imports rise

Japan’s total pig meat imports (inc offal) were up just under 1% year-on-year in the first half of 2019, at 602,700 tonnes. A slight decline in average prices meant the total value of these imports remained stable at ¥298.5 billion

Dwindling discounts for heavy pigs in recent years

A few weeks ago, we looked at the factors behind changes in the SPP. The Standard Pig Price is a weighted average of a sample of standard pigs slaughtered in the week, and reported to AHDB. These pigs can be further categorised into carcase weight bands. Each of these bands tends to be at a slightly different price level.

FAO meat price index up for sixth consecutive month

The latest figures from the UN Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) show that meat prices have risen for the sixth consecutive month. The FAO’s meat price index reached 176.2 in July, 10% above January but still 17% below the record high from August 2014.

Pig prices pause movement for the week

The EU-spec SPP showed very little movement in the week ending 3 August, gaining just 0.01p to average 152.80p/kg.
