It has been an exciting time within the innovation team of late. We have been following up a couple of new ideas that were introduced at our innovation conference, which is nearly a year ago now, and I am excited to see some come to fruition.
We were joined in December by Dominic Charman, who has been very enthusiastic about getting some of these projects really moving. I am pleased to see the EPI air project off the ground after quite a few stop-starts. In this, metal tubes are hung above the pens which give particles in the air a charge. These particles then stick to surfaces, removing them from the ‘breathing space’.
We have learnt a lot about dust, pathogens and odour sampling and a photo-story can be found here. We are already seeing dust sticking to the pipes and ceiling, which is hopefully improving the health of both pigs and people.
On novel diagnostics and therapeutics, Martha and Anisha at the University of Leicester, have found some interesting bacteriophage against Salmonella and Brachyspira and hopefully will have a complete library in a month’s time.
The work with LED lighting is going well. The blue lights look as though they chill pigs out but we need to improve the way they see their feed and move out of the building in normal light! Other than that, work is forging ahead on all the other things going on such as Ultra High Frequency ear tags, the effect of omega 3 on small piglets, stocking density and feeder space. A major project on water hygiene is also in the pipeline.
