Getting through tough times by Stephen Winfield, KE Team Lead

Stephen Winfield, KT LeadAs our industry finds itself facing another challenging period due to the falling pig price, it became clear that the AHDB Pork KE team needed to act to ensure producers were getting support and information.

A series of activities has been planned under the title “Getting Through Tough Times” (GTTT). The first of which was a webinar on 15 February which attracted an audience of more than 40 people.

Stephen Howarth (AHDB Market Specialist Manager) gave a market outlook, Ciaran Carroll (Head of Pig Development at Teagasc) spoke about reducing production costs and Jonathan Eckley (AHDB Export Trade Development Manager) spoke about our export opportunities.

If you missed anything, fear not, the webinar is available on the website along with the presentations from the evening.

Keeping the theme going through March and April comes in the form of regional pig clubs where there will be two main areas covered. The first is called “re-evaluating your unit” and will look at ways of improving efficiencies and performance and the second is “what if calculators” and this will look at key areas where COP can be reduced and where potential income improvements can be made.

There are five events taking place across the regions so check the events map on the AHDB Pork website to see where your local event is. These events are an opportunity to hear from and question key industry figures.

Ultimately we are in this together and we are here to help, so feel free to give your local KE manager a call to discuss your production needs. Or come and see us at the Pig & Poultry Fair in May.
