AHDB Pork Blog
With all the AHDB job adverts flying around, you may have been curious about what changes have been happening at AHDB Pork. You might even have wondered if I’d gone away. Well, suffice to say I’m still here, along with the Pork team, ready as ever to help producers and the industry.
It’s true we did have a spell of heavy recruitment following the departure of a number of staff. Like most businesses we expect turnover – it’s an ongoing challenge and sometimes, like buses, it all comes at once! Our staff are hugely important, as is their personal development, so when they leave to move forward in their careers it’s hard but welcomed as a sign that we are repopulating the wider pig industry. Not everyone moved away. However, I am pleased to share the news that Kate Mellor is now leading the KE Team, so we have been looking for her replacement in the south. During this difficult time, I must thank the team for all their patience and dedication to keeping all the gaps plugged.
As for my role, after discussions with Mike Sheldon, Mick Sloyan and our senior team, it has been agreed that the resource AHDB Pork has developed is in fact needed across all the farming sectors. So I write this column as head of a new Environment and Buildings team, still sat in the Pork department, with Pork remaining my first priority, but I now work in a wider field, too.
This is a natural progression as, right from my early days at MLC, some aspects of the environmental work such as NVZ discussions with Defra have come to have a wider impact. Now we are conducting it officially as a team and thankfully have access to more support in the process.
