From there he went on to a fieldsman role looking after several units including nucleus, outdoor and gilt rearing leading onto his current role with AHDB Pork.

    Angela has experience in the dairy, beef and pork livestock sectors. She has lived and worked internationally and spent 17 years with Genus PLC. In 2002 she was appointed as their Global Business Development Director based in Wisconsin USA and was instrumental in the Genus purchase of the Pig Improvement Company in 2005.

    Following her career with Genus, Angela set up her own training business and has designed and delivered hundreds of training programmes over the past seven years for both the public and private sector.

    Angela is passionate about the UK Agricultural Industry and optimising its strength as we move forward in challenging times.

    Angela graduated from Newcastle University with an Honours degree in agriculture and spent 10 years in pig production before returning to Aberdeen university to take an MSc in pig production. Since then she has worked with two breeding companies as technical support for AI and reproduction, before joining the AHDB Pork technical team in 2006.

    Introduction

    Ben joined AHDB as Knowledge Transfer Senior Manager in May 2018 and is working on activity to help close the current production gap that exists between ourselves and other EU countries. Previously he worked in the education sector, having taught agriculture for the last ten years. During this time, Ben also ran and worked on a variety of pig and mixed livestock units, from day-to-day husbandry to site management, butchery and further processing.

    Introduction

    Cheryl began working for AHDB in August 2014 and is the Pork Health Coordinator. She has over 30 years of administrative experience and has worked for various companies in administration and management.

    The Health Coordinator role is varied, providing administrative support to all the Health and Welfare team. Cheryl is Secretary to the Pig Health and Welfare Council (PHWC) as well as three of the subgroups and has been actively involved with the administration for the Pig Health Scheme, including drafting contracts, keeping track of costings and ensuring reports are promptly dispatched to help keep the scheme running smoothly.

    Lauren joined the Pork Health and Welfare Team in April 2018 and will be working on various disease surveillance projects, with a focus on maintaining and improving welfare. Prior to joining AHDB Lauren was working at ForFarmers with the minerals and nutrition team. Previously she worked at Alltech, developing auditing tools to help pig farmers assess their current performance in comparison with industry standards, so they could identify areas for improvement and drive performance.

    Introduction

    Lauren started working for AHDB in August 2017 and project manages everything and anything abattoir or food safety related, including the Pig Health Scheme, CCIR and traceability. Her role is diverse and requires regular visits to abattoirs across the country, liaising with staff on projects and assisting with veterinary assessments. 

    Prior to joining AHDB, Lauren graduated from Harper Adams University, where she was awarded a pig industry scholarship, and worked for the feed company where she spent her placement year.

    Senior Veterinary Manager
    Introduction

    Mandy Nevel is our Senior Veterinary Manager. Her career in pigs started by spending a year working on an outdoor pig unit before completing a degree in Animal Physiology and Nutrition at the University of Leeds. She followed this with her veterinary degree at the Royal Veterinary College and then spent four years in farm animal practice before completing her PhD in reproduction of the sow.

    Following a year in Canada, she returned to the UK to work for Pfizer, developing vaccines for farm animals. She then returned to the RVC to set up a farm animal pathology unit in 2003 and has continued her research into infectious diseases of pigs including PCV2 and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.

    Nigel studied agricultural engineering at Harper Adams and gained an MSc in Soil and Water Engineering from Cranfield University. He joined the Meat and Livestock Commission in 2004 and now concentrates on nitrates and diffuse water pollution, EPR/IPPC, farm waste and water resources, carbon footprinting and energy use.

    Sam grew up on a farrow-finish farm in Iowa and has a degree in agriculture. She spent time with the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach team, interacting and coordinating activity within the Iowa pork industry. More recently, she has been working on KE campaigns in local authorities and the NHS, including monitoring outcome-based work and stakeholder engagement. In her new role at AHDB, Sam will be working closely with the strategic farms to identify and communicate learning outcomes from the national KE programme.
