While pig meat consumption has held up relatively well during the economic slowdown, latest data show a 2% decline in pork purchases in the last year.

While pig meat consumption has held up relatively well during the economic slowdown, latest data show a 2% decline in pork purchases in the last year. In fact, falling meat consumption was evident across all red meat and poultry categories. The overall fall in consumption of fresh and frozen meat comes despite higher supplies of most meats being available on the UK market. This is being driven by rising imports, with much of the extra product likely destined for use in processed products or foodservice. This situation is putting pressure on the UK prime cattle market, in particular. However, beef and lamb supplies are likely to tighten later in the year.
