Slowdown in EU prices eases

In the 4-week period ended 16 November, EU pig prices fell by almost €2 to €141.11 per 100kg. The EU pig price stood at its lowest point since February 2011 but the decline has slowed in recent weeks, following the sharp falls in September and October.

Higher Spanish exports in January - September

Latest Spanish pork export figures for January to September show a 5% increase in trade. Unlike most EU countries, Spanish access to the Russian market was already restricted before the start of this year but it has been particularly successful at finding other non-EU markets for its exports.

UK clean pig slaughterings in October reached just over 1 million head, almost 2% above the same month last year. With higher slaughterings and heavier carcase weights, there was 4% more domestic pig meat on the market compared with a year earlier.

This year, the gap between UK and EU pig prices has risen to unprecedented levels. This might have been expected to lead to a surge in pig meat imports but they were only up 4% in the first three quarters of the year. Irish trade strengthens in first nine months of 2014

At 110,700 tonnes, latest trade figures showed a stronger position for Irish exports between January and September, as volumes increased by 12% compared with the first nine months of 2013.

Higher pig numbers in Denmark

According to the latest census figures for 1 October, total pig numbers had increased by 4% compared with the same date in 2014. This was the largest pig herd since the second quarter of 2011 and was a result of more pigs being kept for slaughter. The total breeding herd was unchanged from a year previously.

PEDv raises Japanese import requirement

Latest figures show a 13% increase in Japanese pork imports in January to September this year, compared with the same period in 2013. With additional supplies available, the EU became the main provider of pork to Japan.

Pig farm incomes up in 2013/14

According to new figures published by Defra, average Farm Business Income on specialist pig farms rose sharply in 2013/14, to an average of £65,200. This was the highest since 2009/10, also the last time that pig farm incomes were higher than the average for all types of farm.

Barbecue use cools in 2014

Latest data show that there were 65 million barbecue meal occasions in the 12 weeks ending in August 2014. The same period in 2013, which was the driest and warmest barbecue season since 2006, saw 85 million occasions, which was a big increase on the 45 million in 2012.

UK feed wheat futures fell over the week after rallying through most of October. The May-15 contract dropped to £126.00/t on Tuesday, having fallen since last Wednesday, the longest continuous drop since late-September.

EU pig kill marginally down in August

August figures published by Eurostat showed a marginal decline in EU pig slaughterings compared with the same month in 2013, to 19.3 million head. Pig meat production in August was also almost unchanged from a year earlier.

Animal feed production lower in third quarter

Latest figures from Defra show that GB production of animal feed in July to September was 5% lower than a year earlier. In contrast, pig feed production was 1% higher than a year before, mainly due to a 6% rise for finishing feed.

UK imports and exports strengthen in September

During September, pork imports into the UK increased by 3% on the year . However, despite the gap between EU and UK pig prices reaching unprecedented levels, the increase in imports remains modest. UK pork exports also increased by 3% in September. Increased demand from Asian markets led UK exports, particularly from China.

Contrasting trends in US and Canadian exports

At 1.1 million tonnes, US pork exports rose by 4% in the first nine months of this year, compared with the same period in 2013. Canadian exports weakened by 3% year on year in the same period, to 646,400 tonnes.
