Figures show a 2% decline in pork imports in the first nine months of this year. The EU maintained its position as the dominant supplier of pork to China, accounting for 63% of the total, while the UK's market share rose to 5%.

Provisional UK figures from the June survey indicate a 4% year-on-year decline in the overall breeding herd, to 502,000 head, the smallest recorded since 2008. However, despite this, further productivity gains mean that feeding pig numbers were only 1% lower compared with June 2013.

September figures show a 4% increase in clean pig slaughterings, to 821,900 head, the highest September figure since 2001. Clean pig carcase weights reached a record high level at 81.7kg, so pig meat production was the highest September figure since 1999.

Latest figures show an 18% year-on-year decline in Brazilian pork exports in the third quarter of 2014. However, Russia's significance to Brazilian exporters increased, taking nearly half of shipments in September. Prices have also risen sharply.

According to the figures, the Scottish pig population in June was 3% higher compared with June 2013. The Scottish pig herd has declined steadily since late 1990s but in the last year, the breeding herd and feeding pig numbers rose for the first time since 2010.

The EU weaner price has fallen to its lowest point for the year so far in the last week of September. At £38.96 per head, the EU average weaner price for the week ended 28 September was €11 below the start of the year and was the lowest price recorded since November 2011.

Belgium is a net exporter of pig meat and in the first half of this year the country exported, 1% lower compared with the January to June period in 2013. A 3% fall in Germany's intake was more than offset by a 19% increase in exports to Poland.

For the week ended 27 September, the GB SPP fell further to 155.21p per kg, down by almost 1p from the previous week. This confirms that the small increase last week was only temporary and the pig market remains weak.
