Dutch pig exports decline in first half of 2014

During the first two quarters of 2014, Dutch pork exports were slightly behind the previous year. Live pig exports were down 15% in the first half of the year, compared to the previous year, to 4.3 million head.

EU pig prices continue to decline

At €158.24 per 100kg, EU pig prices had generally weakened in the four week period ended 21 September, down by €6. Despite falling domestic quotes, the gap between EU and UK pig prices stood at €33 per 100kg.

Reduction in number of UK pig farms

Defra have recently released figures showing the a 1% fall in the number of UK pig holdings between June 2012 and June 2013, to 11,000. Another new dataset confirms that over half of English pigs are located in Yorkshire and East Anglia.

September US pig numbers down

According to the latest figures published by USDA, the number of pigs on 1 September totalled 65.4 million head. This was down by 2% compared with the same point in 2013 but was 6% up on the previous quarter.

EU breeding herd up for first time in nearly a decade

For the week ended 20 September, the GB SPP rose by 0.05p to 156.12p per kg, the first increase since late June. However, this may only be a temporary deviation from the general trend of late, especially as pig prices in the EU continued to weaken.

Higher UK pig meat supplies in August

Latest figures for August showed a 1% increase in clean pig slaughterings compared with a year earlier, to 775,800 head. With increased carcase weights, total pig meat production reached 64,700 tonnes, 2% higher than the same month in 2013.

Smallest English breeding herd in 60 years

Latest figures published by Defra recorded the smallest English pig breeding herd in around 60 years, at 329,000 head, 5% down compared with the same point in 2013. Despite the lower breeding herd, productivity is pushing the overall pig herd to higher levels.

UK pig prices - week ended 13 September 2014

At 156.07p per kg, the GB SPP for the week ended 13 September continued on its downward trend, with a 0.84p decline on the week before.

Herd expansion in key member states

Provisional results of pig censuses from some key EU member states show a more positive picture than in recent years. Lower feed prices this year have meant some producers were able to expand, resulting in a 1% increase in overall pig numbers across these countries. Total sow numbers also increased on a year earlier.

Lower prices drive higher pork purchases

Shoppers’ spending on pork was up 1% year on year during June-August. The average price for pork was down just over 4%, which helped consumers to increase the amount they purchased per shop. As a result volumes were up some 5% year on year.

Higher Italian imports as production lower

According to the latest figures, Italy’s pork imports in the first half of this year were up 9% from a year earlier, reaching the highest half year figure in records back to 1998. The high import requirement was a direct consequence of a sharp reduction in domestic pig meat production.

EU pig meat output down in first half of 2014

With an extra working day in the month this year, EU pig slaughterings in June were 2% higher than last year at 19.2 million head. Nevertheless, this was the lowest monthly kill of the year and supplies remained tight across Europe. Overall, throughputs in the first half of the year were 1% lower than in 2013.

USDA report prompts further feed price falls

The latest world supply and demand estimates, released by the USDA yesterday further compounded the bearish sentiment that the grains and oilseeds market is experiencing.

More pig meat entering UK but exports up too

9% more pork and bacon entered the UK from overseas during July 2014 than a year before. Pork exports were also up by 9% during the month, with growth again led by China.

Global food prices falling but meat prices continue to rise

The latest food price index from the UN FAO, covering August, fell for the fifth consecutive month, to its lowest point since September 2010. However, as has been the case recently, meat prices continued to rise in August.

The GB SPP edged down for the 10th consecutive week, to 156.91p per kg. This marked a week-on-week change of 0.26p per kg, although this was the smallest fall during this period of decline.

Chilean and Brazilian exports to Russia increase

Following the Russian bans on EU, US & Canadian imports, Brazil and Chile are the main pork exporters which still have access to the Russian market. Latest figures show that, despite their exports falling overall, both have sent more pork to Russia in recent months. Export prices have also increased significantly.

Food price inflation reaches new low

Latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel, show that grocery price inflation fell to 0.2%, the lowest level for at least 8 years. This trend has been followed by retail meat prices, which were unchanged on a year before in July 2014.

Producer share at a low point since start of the year

According the latest farm to retail price spread for August, producers received 40% of the overall retail price, the lowest point since the start of the year.

Indoor breeders drive productivity growth

Latest physical performance data show a further improvement in GB breeding herd performance overall, although outdoor productivity was slightly lower. Performance also improved somewhat in the feeding herd over the last year.

Higher Spanish exports in first half of year

At 507,300 tonnes, Spanish pork exports strengthened in the first half of the year, despite the loss of the Russian market post the ASF outbreak in Poland and Latvia.

German exports weaken in January to June

The latest half year figures from Statistics Germany recorded a 4% year-on-year decline in pork exports, to 823,100 tonnes, despite lower domestic consumption. At 492,400 tonnes, German pork imports also weakened in the first half of this year, down by 1% compared with the previous year.

Producer margins remain positive

Latest AHDB/BPEX estimates of the cost of pig production have now been published. The new figures cover the first two quarters of 2014 and, in future, estimates will be published each quarter, rather than monthly as in the past. The new estimates show that the cost of pig production in the second quarter of 2014 averaged 154p per kg.

Northern Ireland pig census suggests expansion
