Spanish exports power ahead

The long-term growth of Spanish pork exports continued in the first half of 2015, with shipments reaching a record 584,600 tonnes. This was 15% up on a year earlier and more than double the level recorded a decade ago.

Irish pork exports at a record level

In the first half of 2015, Ireland exported 79,200 tonnes of pork, up 11% on 2014 to a record level.

What a difference a year makes

Just over a year ago, US hog prices were at record levels; earlier this year they dropped to a 5½ year low. Although they have recovered somewhat since then, prices remain well below levels recorded in most recent years, never mind last year’s highs.

Fall in French pork exports

In the first half of the year, French pork exports totalled 208,800 tonnes, down by 23,800 tonnes (10%) from the same period a year earlier.

In the first six months of 2015, US pork exports were down 5% on the same period last year. Despite the overall fall, volumes in the second quarter were up 6% year on year, having been down as much as 15% in the first quarter.

EU production remains strong in May

In May, EU pig slaughterings dipped below year earlier levels for the first time since November. However, with one fewer working days in the month, the marginal fall still meant that average daily throughputs were 4% higher than in 2014.

In the week ended 1 August, UK finished pig prices began falling, despite slaughterings also being lower compared to the previous week. The EU-spec SPP was almost a quarter of a penny down on the previous week at 133.01p/kg.
