German pork trade recording diverging trends

There was an overall increase in German pork exports for January to September 2015, with volumes ahead by 1%, compared with a year earlier, at 1.3 million tonnes.

Retail pork sales still struggling

Over the 12 week period ending 11 October 2015, retail pork purchases were down across all cuts except mince and other (mainly marinades), according to Kantar Worldpanel.

Producer share of retail pork price at 11-year low

Farmgate pig prices fell for the third consecutive month in October, leading to the share of retail prices received by producers declining to 34%. This was the lowest share recorded since November 2004.

UK pork imports fall back in September

Following two months of strong growth, UK imports of pork decreased in September by 7%, compared with a year earlier, to 28,700 tonnes, according to the latest figures from HMRC.

UK compound pig feed production in the third quarter of 2015 was 4% higher than in the same period last year, at 467,000 tonnes, according to latest figures released by Defra.

US pig slaughterings in the first nine months of 2015 were running 9% higher compared to the same time period in 2014, at 85 million head.

Pig farm incomes fell in 2014/15

The average Farm Business Income (FBI) across all farm types in England was £39,700 in 2014/15, an 8% decrease year on year, according to the latest figures published by Defra. The FBI for specialist pig farms recorded a 24% decrease year on year from £65,200 to £49,400.
