Last week proved once again to be a difficult one for the finished pig market, with further declines experienced in the EU-spec SPP. The EU-spec price for the week ending 23 January 2016 fell 2.52p to 115.17p/kg – its tenth consecutive week of decline.

EU pig feed production forecast down for 2016

In 2015, total EU compound animal feed production was slightly higher than 2014 at 156.1Mt (+0.2%), as an increase in poultry feed production outweighed a decrease in cattle feed, according to the EU feed manufacturers association (FEFAC).

EU pig price stabilising

Producer share of retail price down in December

Farmgate prices decreased once again in December, to the lowest level of the year. This fall, coupled with an increase in the average retail price compared with November led to the share of the retail price received by producers declining to just under 34%.

UK imported more pig meat in November

Imports of fresh and frozen pork grew in volume in November, compared to the same period last year, by 13%, although the value over the same period dropped 4% to £55.8 million, highlighting the decreasing prices of pork in the EU.

Provisional figures from the November pig census show that the number of pigs in Germany had fallen 3% since last November to 27.5 million - the lowest level seen since 2011.
