Further growth for Spanish exports

In 2016, exports of Spanish pork rose by 18% compared to the previous year, to 1.47 million tonnes. This is the third consecutive year of strong growth in Spanish exports. The increase comes as a result of high levels of demand in China and 5% higher production in Spain. The average unit price of shipments in euro terms remained stable at €2.15/kg, meaning the value of shipments was also up by 18%, to €3.16 billion.

The EU-spec SPP rose by 0.35p in the week ending 4 March 2017, to 149.94p/kg. This price is nearly 38p higher than in the same week a year ago.

EU weaner prices skyrocket

The EU average weaner price has surged over the past three months, climbing over €11 to stand at a shade under €54 per head for week ended 26 February. This is the highest average weaner price on record.

Northern Irish pig herd unchanged in 2016

As at the 1 December 2016, the total pig herd in Northern Ireland increased very slightly to 534,500 head, from 533,400 in the previous year, according to the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland.

The average Farm Business Income (FBI) for specialist pig farms in England is seen to have more than doubled in 2016/17 year on year, from £21,600 to £57,000, according to the latest forecasts from Defra.
