UK PIG PRICES- WEEK ENDED 27 MAY
The EU-spec SPP tipped over the 160p/kg mark for the first time since July 2014, in the week ending 27 May.
At 160.10p/kg the current quote is 0.89p up week on week and 42.6p higher than the same week in 2016. At 162,300 head, estimated slaughterings were 3% down on the week and 2% behind the equivalent week last year as the supply/demand balance remains in favour of producers. In the week ending 27 May, average carcase weights fell by 340g on the week, to the lowest level recorded since Christmas, at 82.81kg. However, it was still 540g up on the year.
In the week ending the 20 May, the EU-spec APP rose for the 12th consecutive week to the highest level since July 2014. At 162.66p/kg, the current quote is 0.80p up on the previous week and nearly 43p higher than the same week in 2016. The gap between the APP and the SPP now stands at 3.45p/kg, marginally up on the week.
Both 30kg and 7kg weaner prices rose in the week ending 27 May. At £59.90/head, the 30kg weaner price was 12p up on the week and £20.56/head higher than the equivalent week in 2016. 7kg weaner prices rose by 53p on the week to £43.31/head, with the current quote £14.22/head higher than the same week last year.
