Steadying decline in GB pig prices

The EU-spec SPP continued its descent in week ended 25 November, falling 0.42p to 153.24p/kg. The current quote is just 2.5p higher year on year; the smallest premium over year earlier levels since August 2016.

Weaker currency boosts competitiveness of GB pig production

Great Britain was the only member country to record a decline in pig production costs in sterling terms last year, according to the latest pig production costs report from InterPIG. The InterPIG group consists of a selection of organisations from key producing countries, with AHDB representing GB.

Slight expansion in Welsh pig herd

The number of pigs in Wales is significantly lower than that of England and Northern Ireland, but does contribute to total UK production. As at 1 June, the estimated number of pigs in Wales was almost 6% (1,300 head) higher on the year, at a total of 24,500 head, according to the results of the June Agricultural and Horticultural Survey.

China no longer dominating the decline in EU pig meat exports

EU fresh/frozen pork exports remained behind year earlier levels in September, with volumes falling nearly 8% on 2016 levels to 161.6 thousand tonnes. With average unit prices showing little change from the month last year, in value terms the market also declined 7%, to €387 million.

Russia closes gaps in agri-food import ban
