GB pig prices ease again

For the week ended 21 October, the EU-spec SPP dropped by 0.82p to stand at 157.07p/kg.

EU reference price falls below year earlier levels

In the four weeks ending 15 October, the EU reference price fell quite considerably by €17.24/100kg to €150.40/100kg.

USDA forecast growth in global pork production

The USDA forecast global pork production to rise almost 2% on the year to 113.1 million tonnes in 2018.

Scottish pig herd now declining

As at 1 June, the Scottish pig herd stood at just under 326 thousand head, according to data released by the Scottish Government. This represented a 1% decline on the year earlier, and is the first time the Scottish herd has fallen since 2013.

EU pig meat exports continue to decline

EU exports of fresh/frozen pork totalled 160 thousand tonnes in August, 11% less than the same month last year.

GB pig prices fall once again

In the week ended 14 October, the EU-spec SPP declined for the eighth consecutive week, recording a drop of 1.03p to stand at 157.89p/kg. The current quote is now only 12.81p above year earlier levels.

Another month of growth for UK pork exports

Having moved ahead of year earlier levels in July, UK pork exports reported a second consecutive month of growth in August, climbing 9% on the year to reach 17.9 thousand tonnes. The value of these exports also increased by 15% on the year to £24 million, with the average unit price climbing, partly due to the weaker pound.

Producer’s share of pork retail price declines

The producer’s share of the retail pork price decreased by 1% on the month in September to 43.3%, returning to levels last seen in May.

Higher carcase weights help production in September

In September, clean pig slaughterings in the UK totalled 876,500 head, 4% down on the year, according to latest data from Defra. 

Price inflation drives rise in domestic spend on pork

In the 12 weeks ending 10 September, volumes of fresh/frozen pork sold decreased marginally (-0.6%) on the year, according to latest data from Kantar Worldpanel. However, average retail prices increased by 7% over the same period, leading to a 6% year on year increase in total spend. 

UK pig herd climbs on the year in June

As at 1 June, the UK pig herd stood at just under 5 million head, 2% up year on year, according to provisional survey results from Defra.

GB pig prices continue to fall

Japan’s pork consumption continues steady climb

The USDA has recently published its Japan market update and outlook. As the second largest global pork importer, Japanese imports of fresh/frozen pork in the year to date (January to August) are up nearly 8% year-on-year to a total of 612,000 tonnes.

In July, EU pig meat production remained relatively unchanged on the year at 1.8 million tonnes, according to provisional data from the EU Commission. Year to date (January – July) EU pig meat production is now just 1% lower than year earlier levels at 13.4 million tonnes.

Irish pig herd now declining

Results from the Ireland Central Statistics Office for the June 2017 Pig Survey indicate that the total Irish pig herd fell by over 2% on the year, to 1.56 million head. Within this, numbers of finishing pigs were back 2%, while the breeding herd fell by almost 4% on 2016 levels.
