GB pig feed production on the up
In August GB compound pig feed production was 7% higher than the same period in 2016 at 153,300 tonnes, according to latest data from Defra.
Furthermore, August marks the second consecutive month of annual rises in compound pig feed output, following a year of general declines. The main driver behind the overall rise was a 7% uptick in finisher feed production to 78,100 tonnes. Pig starter/ grower feed production also recorded a marked increase on the year in August of 8% to reach 41,500 tonnes. Breeder feed production rose by a more modest 4% year on year to 32,800 tonnes in August.
The decline in compound pig feed usage during the first half of the year echoed reports that domestic pig meat supplies were tight, with production down on year earlier levels. However, the upturn in pig feed production during July and to a greater extent August reflects the rise in pig slaughter weights and production that has been reported. Looking further ahead and the increase in starter/grower feed production since May could indicate a rise in pig meat production in the later quarter of this year and the first quarter of 2018.
