In the week ending 7 October, the EU-spec SPP recorded the largest week on week decline for this series since January 2016.

At 158.92p/kg, the current quote is 1.52p down on the week and is now just 15p above year earlier levels. Estimated slaughterings in the week ending 7 October declined by 17% on the week and 14% on the year to 152,200 head. While this may appear to be a substantial drop on the week, throughputs were considerably up (12%) in the previous week. Average carcase weights are also down by 220g on the week at 84.43kg, but remain 1.97kg above year earlier levels.

The EU-spec APP declined for the sixth consecutive week in the week ending 30 September at 163.99p/kg, a decrease of 1.01p week on week and just 19.34p above year earlier levels. As the APP posted greater declines in the week, the gap between the APP and the SPP narrowed by 0.41p to stand at 3.55p/kg.


Both weaner categories recorded price declines in the week ending 7 October. 30kg weaner prices lost £2.38 week on week to stand at £55.93/head, which is just £6.10 higher than year earlier levels. The 7kg weaner price recorded declined by £0.70 on the week and is now just £6.93 more than the same week in 2016 at £43.33/head.
