In the week ended 31 March, the EU-spec SPP increased. At 145.85p/kg, the price averaged 0.48p higher than the previous week. This is the largest week-on-week increase since July 2017. Although prices stood 7.28p/kg behind year earlier levels.

The return to an increase in the SPP comes as throughputs fall back compared with a week earlier. At 168,100 head, estimated slaughterings were steady on the year but 10% lower than the previous week and likely affected by the long weekend. Average carcase weights were steady week-on-week at 83.58kg. However, they were 110g behind year earlier levels, which would have further eroded production volumes.

At 148.63p/kg, the EU-spec APP in the previous week ended 24 March rose 0.30p on the week. This was also the largest weekly increase since July. With the SPP recording a more modest increase than the APP the gap between the two prices widened to 3.26p.
