UK pig herd confirmed up 2% in June
The final results of Defra’s June Survey, published in December, confirm that as at 1 June the UK pig herd stood at 4.97 million head, up 2% on the year.
The final estimate is virtually on par with the provisional figures released in October. A modest upward revision (+4,000 head) was made to the number of feeding pigs, which totalled 4.5 million head overall. The number of non-pregnant sows was also revised downward marginally (-1,000 head), to 64,000 head overall. These changes have a negligible impact on the overall herd size.
