GB pig prices hold steady
In the week ending 9 June, the EU-spec SPP remained relatively unchanged compared to the previous week.
Reported at 149.35p/kg, the price was only 0.02p/kg below the week before. However, the measure remains 12.35p/kg below year earlier levels.
Industry commentary suggests that demand has weakened slightly, though supplies continue to be very tight. Nonetheless, estimated slaughterings lifted 1% week-on-week, totalling 172,000 head. This estimate is also 6% above the previous year. Average carcase weights dropped by 220g on the week to 82.88kg, around a quarter of a kilo lighter than year before levels.
The EU-spec APP increased by 1.31p/kg in the week ending 2 June, to 152.28p/kg. This is the largest increase week-on-week since May 2017 and mirrors a similar movement in the SPP in the equivalent week.As the APP gained slightly more than the SPP in the same week, the price difference between the two measures has widened to 2.91p.
7kg weaner prices regained the 37p lost in the previous week, to stand at £38.07/head for the week ending 9 June. This however stands £5.79/head below the equivalent week last year. Meanwhile, 30kg weaner prices were reported at £53.94/head, £1.64 above two weeks ago, when the price was last published at £52.30/head.
