Pig Prices continue to ease

During the week ending 13 October, the EU-spec SPP continued downwards, falling by 0.49p to 146.30p/kg. The price is currently 11.59p below the same week last year.

GB estimated slaughterings were up around 9,000 head (+5%) on the week to total 183,900 head, although this was only 0.3% higher than the same week in 2017. The average carcase weight for the SPP sample fell by almost 200g to 83.64kg, over 1.5kg lower than the week last year.


Following the trend of the last 3 weeks, the EU-spec APP also declined slightly in the week ending 6 October, down 0.45p, to stand at 150.01p/kg. The current figure is 12.01p lower than year earlier levels. The gap between the APP and the SPP in the corresponding week was 3.22p.  

In the week ending 13 October, GB 30kg weaner prices regained the previous week’s losses and averaged £52.16/head, up £5.52 on the week. The 7kg weaner price rose more modestly on the week, up only £1.48, to £37.55/head.
