Prices show a small decline for GB pigs
During the week ended 8 September, the EU spec SPP fell by 0.23p, to 148.05p/kg. This continues the downward trend recorded in recent weeks. The price is currently 14.87p below last year’s price.
Estimated slaughterings were up 5,900 head on the week to total 175,300 head, however the previous week did include a bank holiday. Similarly, slaughterings also increased year-on-year, 6,900 head up on the same week of 2017. Industry reports suggest that demand is being held up well as the weather turns slightly. The average carcase weight for the SPP sample for the week is 82.48kg. This is decrease of 180g on the previous week, but more significantly, 1.65kg less than the previous year.
The EU-spec APP also recorded declines, falling by 0.78p in the week ended 1 September, to finish on 151.38p/kg. The current figure measures 15.92p less than year earlier levels. In the corresponding week, the SPP declined less severely and so the gap between the two prices has narrowed, to 3.10p/kg.
In the week ended 8 September, the GB 7kg weaner price averaged £37.74/head, an increase of 25p compared to the previous week. Contrastingly, the 30kg weaner price dropped back, by £1.18 to average the week at £53.74/head.
