UK pork imports still falling as exports rise

The latest figures published by HMRC show a 20% year-on-year increase in UK pork exports in October. In contrast, with EU prices still outstripping those in the UK, pork imports were 7% lower than last year. Imports were still higher than in October 2017 though.

EU kills more pigs in September

EU pig slaughter figures published by Eurostat show a 1.3% increase in September when compared with the same month in 2018, at 20.9 million head. September 2019 did have an extra working day though.

Pig meat supplies fall on Italian market

Domestic pork production within Italy has fallen in the year to date. For the year to September, pig meat production decreased by 2% (-22,000 tonnes) compared to the previous year. The annual decline was particularly marked in Q3, when volumes were 4% lower.

Global pig prices remain high

EU red meat demand remains disappointing

The EU-spec SPP moved up again in the week ending 30 November, recording the largest weekly increase for six weeks. This extends the price premium over the same week last year to 16.25p.

UK pig meat production growth set to continue

With expectations that the breeding herd has grown this year, our forecasts suggest UK pig meat production is set to continue increasing in the coming months. Nevertheless, reports of challenges to productivity this summer mean the supply increase may be limited early next year.

Higher Spanish pork exports continue
