GB pig price steadies
GB pig prices remained virtually stable in the latest week ended 23 February
The EU-spec SPP fell by 0.01p to 137.49p/kg, just over 8p below year-earlier levels. This is the smallest price movement since the downward trend began last July, perhaps reflecting tightening supplies now softening the fall.
Estimated slaughterings in the week stood at just over 172,000 head, up slightly (+0.8%) on the week but still down on the same week last year (-6.4%). Average carcase weights increased on the week to average 85.09kg, up just over 800g on the year.
The EU-spec APP rose by 0.55p in the week ended 16 February to 143.76p/kg. This is 5.26p below year-earlier levels. As the SPP declined in the same week, the gap between the two prices series widened again, to a new record difference of 6.26p.
The price for 7kg weaners in the week ended 23 February was recorded at £36.77/head, up 94p on the week. The 30kg weaner price stood at £48.93/head, over £5.50 higher compared to the last published price three weeks ago.
