GB pig prices continue downwards

Home \ Prices & Stats \ News \ 2019 \ February \ GB pig prices continue downwards

The EU-spec SPP continued on a downward trajectory in the week ended 9 February, back 0.41p to average 137.74p/kg. The current price is around 8p lower than the same week of 2018. Industry reports suggest that supply could become tighter in the coming months which could relieve some pressure on the price.

Estimated slaughterings in the week were 186,000 head, up 3,000 head compared to the corresponding week of 2018. Carcase weights fell slightly to average 85.35kg. The current carcase weight remains above year earlier levels by over 800g.

After a slight increase the week before, the EU-spec APP came back again slightly in the week ended 2 February. Averaging 143.89p/kg, the price was down 0.20p on the week and is currently 6p below the previous year’s price in the equivalent week. With the SPP falling at a slightly quicker rate, the gap between the two prices has widened again, with the APP now 5.74p above the SPP price for the corresponding week.

The price for 7kg weaners in the week ended 9 February was recorded as £35.39/head, down £1.90 from the previous week. The current price is £2.74 lower than the 2018 price. There was insufficient data to provide a statistically robust 30kg weaner price.
