Falling prices in the EU

In the four weeks ending 21 July, the EU pig reference price declined by €3.89 to €174.27/100kg (£156.69/100kg). This is the lowest price since the mid-May.

At 218,000 tonnes, EU exports of fresh and frozen pork were up 31% in volume and 40% in value in May 2019, compared to the previous year. The market was worth €548.9 million.  Offal exports for May were up by 19% to 112,000 tonnes, with a 46% increase in value to €149.4 million. This continues trends seen for most of the year so far.

ASF finally catching up with Poland’s pork production

Polish pork production fell by 1% in the first four months of 2019, compared to the same period last year, totalling 702,400 tonnes. This contrasts with the upward trend that had been in place since 2014.

Brazilian pork production expands to meet growing demand

Brazilian pork production has continued to grow this year. During the first quarter of this year, production was just shy of 1 million tonnes, 4% more than last year, according to IBGE. The growth has been driven by increasing global prices and stronger domestic demand.

UK pork production flat in June

At 823,800 head, UK clean pig slaughter in June was around 1% lower than the same month in 2018. However, as there was one fewer weekday in the month this year, the rate of slaughter is likely to have been higher.

GB sow performance picks back up

The latest physical performance data* shows the productivity of the GB sow herd improved in the 12 months to March 2019, compared to the overall 2018 average. Pigs weaned per sow returned to an average of 25.9, indicating herd performance early this year was better than early last year.

Pig prices pick up further

In the week ended 29 June, the EU-spec SPP gained 1.10p to reach 150.86p/kg. This price is now actually half a penny higher than year earlier levels. Nonetheless, in contrast to much of mainland Europe, prices remain well below this time in 2017.

Lower prices failing to stimulate pork sales

The value of pig meat* retail sales was down 5% in the year-on-year in the 12 weeks ending 19 May, according to the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel. Prices were on average 2% lower than last year, but the volume sold still fell by nearly 3%.

Tight supplies support EU pig price momentum

In the week ended 16 June, EU pig prices reached the highest point since October 2013, at €178.15/100kg. This was nearly €3 higher than the start of the month. However, in the subsequent week, prices eased slightly.

Improved sow productivity produces largest US Q2 pig crop in nearly 50 years

The US pig population has continued its expansion. As at 1 June, the US pig herd stood at 75.5 million head, 4% more than the same point last year and 1% higher than the previous quarter, according to the latest figures from the USDA.  This is the largest June pig inventory since the records began in 1964.
