Pig meat outlook review - July

It’s three months since publishing the April Outlook for the UK pork sector, and so we’ve reviewed that forecast, along with trends and an outlook for farm inputs.

Pig meat outlook summary

  • We maintain our view from the April forecast, that production will be about 2% higher than year-earlier levels in the second half of 2019. This reflects better finishing conditions this year, and growth in the sow population will start to feed through.
  • Carcase weights are expected to remain above year-earlier levels, which could potentially push production even higher.
  • Chinese import demand should continue to draw more pork from the UK and EU markets this year, leaving less available for consumption here. This should prove price supportive.
  • Demand from the domestic market seems to be falling. If this continues, it may work against the benefits brought by increased export demand.
