Pig meat outlook review - July
Pig meat outlook summary
- We maintain our view from the April forecast, that production will be about 2% higher than year-earlier levels in the second half of 2019. This reflects better finishing conditions this year, and growth in the sow population will start to feed through.
- Carcase weights are expected to remain above year-earlier levels, which could potentially push production even higher.
- Chinese import demand should continue to draw more pork from the UK and EU markets this year, leaving less available for consumption here. This should prove price supportive.
- Demand from the domestic market seems to be falling. If this continues, it may work against the benefits brought by increased export demand.
