SPP gains more pace
The EU-spec SPP has picked up the pace a little again and continued to rise in the week ending 1 June.
At 146.47p/kg, this is a 1.13p increase on the week. Reports suggest that retail demand remains relatively quiet. Although, warmer weather last weekend may now have inspired some sales.
Supply also increased compared to last week. Estimated slaughter totalled 163,800 head, similar to last year’s levels. The average carcase weight picked back up in the most recent week as well. Averaging 83.60kg, the carcase weight remains half a kilo above last year’s measure.
In the week ending 25 May, the EU-spec APP increased by 1.07p to reach 148.81p/kg. This was a larger increase than that recorded by the SPP in the same week. So, the difference between the two price series widened again, to 3.47p.
The 7kg weaner price fell slightly in the week ending 1 June. Prices averaged £36.25/head, a decrease of 40p on the week and £1.45 below last year. This brought the average price for May to £36.18/head, up 62p from April. Meanwhile, the 30kg weaner price was £50.16/head, the highest price since October last year.
