Another little lift for the SPP

Home \ Prices & Stats \ News \ 2019 \ March \ Another little lift for the SPP

In the week ended 16 March, the EU-spec SPP lifted marginally for the second consecutive week, with prices increasing by 0.14p to average 137.77p/kg.

However, prices remain over 7.5p below last year’s levels. Despite the price steadying over the past two weeks, demand is still reportedly poor.

Estimated weekly slaughter remained relatively stable on the week at 164,200 head, despite reports storm Gareth stalled one major plant. Throughput, however, was down by 4.2% (7,200 head) compared to the equivalent week in 2018. Meanwhile, carcase weights fell by almost 200g on the week to 84.98kg, the lightest weight so far this year and around half a kilo heavier than 2018.

The EU-spec APP in the week ended 9 March increased by 0.7p, compensating for some of the losses in the previous two weeks, to stand at 142.89p/kg. However, prices continue to track almost 6p below the equivalent week in 2018. The SPP only increased marginally in the same week, so the gap between the APP and the SPP widened to 5.26p.

In the week ended 16 March, 7kg weaner prices recovered the loss seen in the previous week, increasing by 40p to average £35.55/head. Meanwhile, 30kg weaner markets moved in the opposite direction, falling by 68p to average £45.17/head. Both 7kg and 30kg weaner prices continue to track below last year’s levels, by £1.68 and £5.82 respectively.
