SPP keeps climbing up
The EU spec SPP has continued to creep upwards in the week ending 25 May.
At 145.34p/kg, this is a 0.89p increase on the week. While the price remains below last year, the difference has narrowed to under 3p, the smallest gap this year so far.
Supplies remain tight, with weekly slaughterings estimated at 154,700 head, 14,400 head lower than last year. Reports suggest there is little indication of any improvements in the short term. The average carcase weight also fell further to 83.24kg during the week, although this is still 700g heavier than the same week in 2018.
In the week ending 18 May, the EU spec APP increased by 1.10p to reach 147.74p/kg. With the SPP firming more than the APP in the same week, the difference between the two prices closed to 3.29p, the smallest gap in over 7 months.
7kg weaner prices continued to increase steadily in the week ending 25 May. Average prices reached £36.65/head, an increase of 43p on the week. Despite prices firming in recent weeks, prices remain below last year (-£1.42). Demand is reportedly steady following some delays from finishing units. There was insufficient data to create a robust price for 30kg weaners.
