GB finished pig prices continue to gain ground

Home \ Prices & Stats \ News \ 2019 \ November \ GB finished pig prices continue to gain ground

The EU-spec SPP continued to move up in the week ending 23 November. This puts prices over 15p above the same week last year.

Estimated slaughter for the week totalled 189,200 head, 1% more (2,000 head) than last week and 4% more than the week last year. With only four working weeks until Christmas, reports suggest most processors are working at full capacity. In addition, some abattoirs are reportedly operating additional days over the weekend.

Carcase weights were on average 250g heavier than last week, at 84.62kg. Finished pigs were on average 90g heavier than the same time last year.

In the week ending 16 November, the EU-spec APP continued to move up. In the same week, the SPP rose by over three times as much as the APP, and so the gap between the two narrowed to 1.86p.

For the week ending 23 November, the 7kg weaner prices increased considerably (+£1.20/head) on the week, putting prices almost £4/head above the same week last year. This is the highest average price since October 2017. Weaner prices can be volatile due to changes in the mix of pigs traded each week. Reports suggest that supplies have continued to be surplus to demand, with difficulties placing some batches.

Unfortunately, there was insufficient data to provide a 30kg weaner price this week.
