SPP back up on the week
The EU-spec SPP climbed 0.38p in the latest week ended 31 August, to average 153.33p/kg.
This was the largest weekly increase since July, and more than compensated for the slight decline last week. The price is now just over 5p above the price at the same time last year. This continues to increase the difference with the 5-year average, now standing just over 5.5p.
Estimated weekly slaughter stood at 167,100, 7,900 higher than the previous week. Reports suggest that despite the bank holiday Monday, major processors were working a full week. Carcase weights were up 130g on the previous week to 83.58kg, also up over 900g on the previous year.
The EU-spec APP for the week ended 24 August remained flat at 155.63p/kg, up just 0.02p on the week. The difference between the APP and the SPP now stands at 2.68p, slightly wider than the previous week.
For the week ended 31 August, the 7kg weaner price was £39.29/head, 28p higher than last week. This is £1.80 higher than last year and £1.85 higher than the 5-year average. 30kg weaners stood at £56.12/head, £2.95 more than last week and £3.93 higher than the 5-year average.
