GB pig prices gain again
The EU-spec SPP moved up again in the week ending 30 November, recording the largest weekly increase for six weeks. This extends the price premium over the same week last year to 16.25p.
Estimated slaughter for the week was 188,300 head, nearly 1,000 head lower than last week, but 1,800 more than in the same week last year. Christmas is fast approaching, as is Chinese New Year, and reports continue to suggest that processors are killing as many pigs as possible.
Carcase weights were slightly lighter than last week, at 84.59kg, although they continue to run heavier than last year.
In the week ending 23 November, the EU-spec APP moved up too, and by more than the SPP, and so the gap between the two widened to 2.20p.
For the week ending 30 November, the 7kg weaner price fell again after last week’s increase, losing £1.17/head on the week. Although, the price is now over £4/head above a year ago. Weaner prices can be volatile due to changes in the mix of pigs traded each week.
Unfortunately, there was insufficient data to provide a 30kg weaner price this week.
