Evaluation of VIA-based weight monitoring systems

Home \ Research & Innovation \ Research \ Production Efficiency \ Evaluation of VIA-based weight monitoring systems

Research partners: C. P. Schofield, Silsoe Livestock Systems Ltd., Osborne (Europe) Ltd.

Duration: 2005-2006

Aims and objectives

To evaluate a prototype portable hand-held visual image analysis (VIA) pig weight monitoring system for use in measuring weight and growth rate, predicting lean meat yield, and providing data for feed management.

Findings

Published results demonstrate that VIA can:

  • Measure the weight (with errors under 5%) and growth rate of pigs
  • Predict lean meat yield
  • Provide data for feed management models designed to control growth rate and fat deposition.
