An important requirement of the Red Tractor scheme is that Real Welfare assessments of finisher pigs (>50kg) are carried out by a vet belonging to the Pig Veterinary Society as part of the quarterly vet visits. This came in on 1 April 2013.
The Real Welfare project is also working closely with the AssureWel project, which has been introduced to the RSPCA Freedom Food and Soil Association assurance schemes. Both sets of protocols and measures have been developed to be complementary; however, AssureWel includes some additional measures for finishers, plus assessment of sows. The Real Welfare data will not be shared with Freedom Food or Soil Association, meaning some units will be assessed by both Real Welfare and AssureWel.
