The online challenge for red meat

Online grocery sales will more than double in the next five years, according to IGD. The need for longer use by dates and product quality assurance are two of the key challenges facing fresh meat in the online channel. Nearly half of online grocery shoppers say they prefer to buy fresh foods in-store rather than buying online.

UK feed wheat prices continued on the downward trend this week, weakened by the good harvest reports from the EU and UK. Concerns over dry weather in key US soyabean growing states and strong export sales provoked a price rally over the past week.

EU pig meat demand holding up

Demand for meat in the EU has generally slowed since the economic downturn in 2008, particularly for red meat. However, in comparison to beef and lamb, pork has performed relatively well. Data from key countries for early 2014 provide further confirmation of this. However, while the EU economic outlook suggests some improvement, growth is likely to be sluggish and some uncertainties remain.

Higher pork imports into South Korea

At 169,700 tonnes, South Korean pork imports strengthened by 7% in the first half of this year, compared with 2013, as PEDv hit its domestic production and increased demand for imports. Korea’s dependency the EU market increased, as imports rose by nearly 40% during the first half of the year.

For the week ended 26 July, the GB SPP fell to 160.94p per kg. This marked a decline for the fourth consecutive week as prices fell to their lowest point since April 2013.

Favourable growing conditions and strong supply prospects for new season crops have continued to exert downward price pressure on grains throughout the last week. The oilseed complex has also been influenced by bearish factors throughout the last week, with favourable weather and strong supply prospects putting pressure on prices.

Highest May UK pork exports since 2000

The UK’s pork export market performed strongly in May, with shipments up 19% on a year earlier at 16,200 tonnes. At 30,500 tonnes, pork imports in May were only marginally up on the previous year.

UK pig meat supplies set to increase

Latest AHDB/BPEX forecasts for UK pig meat supplies point to an increase in availability in the coming months. With the breeding herd thought to have stabilised and productivity continuing to improve, growth of 3% in slaughterings is forecast for both the rest of this year and for 2015. Imported pig meat is also likely to remain more plentiful and a further increase in exports will be insufficient to make a big dent in the level of supplies on the domestic market.

More African Swine Fever cases in the EU

Over the last week, several new cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) have been reported from Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, including one on a large pig farm in Lithuania. The past week has also seen reports emerge of ASF being found in meat products from a major Russian processor. The WTO has established a panel to review the dispute between the EU and Russia over the latter’s restrictions on imports of pork, imposed following the initial ASF outbreak.

EU holds a large share of Chinese imports

The Chinese pork import market strengthened in the first half of the year, with volumes up by 9% on the year earlier. Offal imports, on the other hand, weakened by 3% in the first half of the year.

UK June slaughterings well up

At, 771,700 head, UK clean pig slaughterings in June increased by 4% compared with the same month in 2013. This brought the total UK kill for the first half of the year to almost 5 million head, up 1% from same period in 2013.

EU pork exports return to growth

At, 132,800 tonnes, EU pork exports in May were marginally higher compared with 2013. Similarly, pig offal exports rose marginally in May, to 90,000 tonnes.

Falling prices in the EU

The recent upturn in EU finished pig prices, which started in early May, has reversed in the last couple of weeks. EU pig prices fell from €175.36 per 100kg in week ended 6 July, the highest point of the year so far, to €168.43 per 100 kg in the latest week. The swift backward step resulted from the start of summer holidays hitting demand in Northern Europe.

Global growth in meat production to slow down

According to the global outlook just published by FAO and OECD, world meat production is expected to show a smaller rate of growth of 1.6% per annum in the 2014 to 2023 period compared with the previous 10 years.

Brazilian export prices rising fast
