Volumes of primary pork sold by UK retailers in the 12 weeks ending 28 March, fell once again on the year, by 2.5%, while the average unit price increased by 1.4%, according to latest data from Kantar Worldpanel. As a result, the total spend on pork over the period fell by 1%.

UK pig slaughterings continue to fall in March

In March, UK clean pig slaughterings were 5% lower than the same month in 2016, at 876,600 head, according to latest figures from Defra.

Producers share of retail price remains stable in March

The share of pork retail prices received by producers remained unchanged on the month in March at 40.5%. Nonetheless, this remains the largest share received by producers since July 2014.

The EU average pig reference price has climbed over the past four weeks, gaining almost €9, to stand at €161.75/100kg in week ending 02 April. The current quote is the highest since October 2016 and over €33/100kg higher than the equivalent week last year.

Canadian pig herd still in ascendancy

The latest figures released by Statistics Canada indicate that the Canadian pig herd has continued to increase, climbing almost 2% on 2016 levels to stand at 13.7 million head on 1 January 2017. This is now the fourth consecutive year of expansion.
