The EU-spec SPP remained relatively unchanged in the week ending 12 August. At 164.53p/kg the current quote is just 0.01p lower than the previous week, but is 29.53p higher than the same period last year.

Estimated slaughterings in the week ending 12 August increased by 1% on the week, but were 3% lower than the same period in 2016, at 163,400 head. Average carcase weights recorded a slight fall on the week of 20g to 83.29kg, while probe measurements remained unchanged at 11.2mm. However, compared to the same period last year the current weight is 1.66kg heavier.

In the week ending 5 August, the EU-spec APP fell by 0.47p week on week to 167.99p/kg. However, the current quote remains well above year earlier levels by nearly 32p. The gap between the APP and the SPP narrowed slightly on the previous week to 3.45p as the APP recorded a greater decline.

Weaner prices recorded diverging trends in the week ending 12 August. At £61.17/head 30kg weaner prices gained £1.11/head on the previous week and was £16.13/head up on the same period in 2016. On the other hand, 7kg weaner prices fell by £0.45/head week on week, to £44.55/head, but were £11.82/head up on the year.
