Production costs reach 4-year high- producer margins at risk

The latest estimates from AHDB indicate that total pig production costs for Q2 2018 were the highest since early 2014. At an average 150p/kg, costs were only marginally below the average pig price (EU-spec APP) during the quarter, of 151p/kg.

Italian demand still supporting French trade

Minimal movement in GB pig prices

In the week ended 18 August, the EU-spec SPP slipped by a marginal 0.16p, to 149.10p/kg. The price currently stands 15.56p below the same week last year.

EU pig meat production increases in May

The latest data from Eurostat show EU pig production was 2.07 million tonnes in May 2018, a 3% increase year-on-year. This was due to a 2% increase in pig slaughterings compared to a year earlier (totalling 22.1 million head) combined with a slight rise in carcase weights (+1%) to average 93.4kg.

EU pork exports grow in June, in tough global conditions

EU exports of fresh and frozen pork rose by 4% in June compared with a year earlier, at just over 160,000 tonnes, according to data from Eurostat. However, export prices across the region were about 13% lower than a year ago, meaning that the value of June exports was also lower by 10% at €365 million.

UK production above 2017 levels

Despite reports of reasonably tight supplies, the latest Defra slaughter statistics indicate clean pig throughputs were 6% above year earlier levels in July, at 883,600 head. However, note there was one extra working day in July this year, which may account for some of the increase in throughputs; on a like-for-like basis the growth would be closer to 1%.

Depressed US pork market weighs on Canada

With US pork prices falling sharply in recent weeks, prices in neighbouring Canada have also taken a tumble. Carcase prices in the most recent week are around 30% lower compared with the June peak in both Quebec and Ontario.

During the week ending 11 August, the EU-spec SPP fell by 0.55p to 149.26p/kg, the largest weekly price change in the SPP for eight weeks. The price currently stands 15.27p below year earlier levels.

UK pig meat trade- both imports and exports decline in June

HMRC reported fresh/frozen pork exports fell 7% year-on-year in June, to total 16,700 tonnes. The fall in pork exports was coupled with a slight 2% decline in average prices, to average £1.35/kg, meaning value fell by 9% on the year to £22.6 million.

Largest Danish pig herd since 2007

As at July 1 2018, the latest figures from Statistics Denmark indicate that the Danish pig herd totalled 12.9 million head, a 3% increase on year earlier levels. Within this, piglet numbers were 3.5% higher, at 2.6 million head, and slaughter pig numbers were almost 5% higher at 3.0 million head.

Sausages bring home the bacon

During the 12 weeks to 15 July, retail sales of pig meat* recorded a 1.4% rise year-on-year, according to the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel. With retail prices also increasing, this meant the total value of the category increased by just over 2%.
