SPP continues upward

The EU-spec SPP once again recorded a slight increase in the week ended 23 March, up 0.19p week-on-week to average 137.96p/kg.

New World pig prices

In the past couple of few weeks, pig prices in the US have been rallying sharply. There is optimism that the African Swine Fever (ASF) situation in China will relieve the pressure on an otherwise oversupplied market.

No-deal Brexit could push American pork onto British plates

Last week, the government announced the proposed tariff regime that would apply under a no-deal Brexit. Looking at the product mix for UK pig meat imports last year, the average tariff would add around €0.10/kg (around 9p/kg) to the price of pig meat imports.

GB pig meat retail sales flat overall

In the 12 weeks to 24 February 2019, GB pig meat* retail sales were down only slightly compared to the same period last year (-0.8%), according to Kantar Worldpanel. The value of these sales fell by 3%, reflecting lower shelf prices.

Strong start to 2019 for EU pork exports

EU pork exports strengthened at the turn of the year. January figures showed a 9% (+18,000 tonnes) increase compared to the same month in 2018, reaching 201,000 tonnes. The total value amounted to €444.3 million, up 5%.

Another little lift for the SPP

In the week ended 16 March, the EU-spec SPP lifted marginally for the second consecutive week, with prices increasing by 0.14p to average 137.77p/kg.

UK pork trade higher in first month of 2019

UK pork trade in 2019 got off to a flying start, with both exports and imports increasing year on year.

EU pig meat production up in 2018

According to the latest figures from Eurostat, EU pig meat production for December was down 5% compared to December 2017.

UK pig slaughter down in February

UK clean pig slaughter in February was 834,200 head, 4% lower than the same month in 2018. This was driven by a 6% drop in slaughter in England (and Wales), as throughput in Scotland and Northern Ireland actually increased by 4% and 7% respectively.

Decrease in the December pig herd

According to Defra figures, UK pig numbers on 1 December 2018 totalled 4.6 million head. This was more than 1% lower compared with the same point a year before, but still above 2016 levels.

Uplift in the EU market

The EU pig price increased steadily during February, averaging €135.92/100kg across the month. This was €1.65 higher than the January average.

SPP price steadies

Decrease in Canadian pig herd

The latest figures from Statistics Canada show that the size of the Canadian pig herd on 1 January 2018 was 1% down compared to a year earlier, but it is still above 14 million head.

EU pig meat TRQs

The EU has a number of Tariff Rate Quotas for pig meat, which allow imports to enter at a reduced tariff rate. Uptake of these quotas is currently low, so these quotas may be relevant for British suppliers in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Falling pig prices put further pressure on producer margins

Pig production costs in the fourth quarter of 2018 were about the same as the previous three months, according to the latest AHDB estimates. The average GB production cost stood at 156p/kg, remaining at the highest level since 2013 and 12p/kg up compared to the same time a year before.

Irish pig meat exports continue to grow

Irish pig meat exports grew in 2018, up nearly 4% from 2017 to 260,000 tonnes. The value of these exports grew by 5% over the same period, to €805 million.

Spanish exports go from strength to strength

In 2018 Spain produced 4.5 million tonnes (cwe) of pig meat, 5% more than in 2017, with 52.4 million pigs slaughtered according to Eurostat data.

US pork export growth steadies

Pig meat exports from the United States were higher in the year to November 2018, by 4% to total 2 million tonnes. Primarily driven by increases in fresh/frozen pork earlier on in the year, growth steadied a little in more recent months.

DAERA records contraction in the NI pig herd

The national pig breeding herd in Northern Ireland has declined 7% (3,300 head) year-on-year, to 44,100 head, according to December census results from DAERA NI.
