SPP up 1.51p but still below last year's prices

Home \ Prices & Stats \ News \ 2019 \ May \ SPP up 1.51p but still below last year's prices

In the week ended 18 May the EU-spec SPP rose 1.51p to average 144.45p/kg during the week.

UK prices are now beginning to respond to the high price levels in much of mainland Europe, suggesting the influence of Brexit stockpiles is wearing thin. Despite this increase, the price is still just under 3.5p below last year’s price.

Estimated throughput for the week totalled 160,200 head, down 3,200 head compared to last week and 6,000 head lower than last year. This reflects ongoing reports of tightening supply. Average carcase weights also dropped again this week, down 440g to average 83.43kg. This meant weight was in line with 2018 levels for the first time this year.

Meanwhile, in the week ended 11 May, the EU-spec APP averaged 146.64p/kg. This is a rise of 1.08p compared to the previous week. The price is now around 3.5p below the 2018 price for the time of year. Due to a larger increase in the SPP for the corresponding week, the gap between the SPP and the APP narrowed further, to 3.7p.

The 7kg weaner price in the week ended 18 May averaged £36.22/head, climbing 49p on the previous week. 30kg weaners stood at £47.86/head up £2.27 on two weeks previous.
